Work is underway on House of the Dragon Season 3, and showrunner Ryan Condal has just teased one “conceptual episode” that will be a major departure for the show.
The Dance of the Dragons has begun – for real, this time. In the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, Rhaenyra demanded a “son for a son”, and Alicent agreed to sacrifice Aegon to end the war.
Things won’t go to plan in the third season, though, because Aegon has already fled King’s Landing with Larys, and one of the biggest naval battles in Westeros’ history is about to take place: the Battle of the Gullet, and one character will almost definitely bite the dust.
Thanks to George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, fans have a rough idea of what to expect – but with one episode, all bets are off.
House of the Dragon Season 3 will have a “conceptual episode”
Speaking to Josh Horowitz, Condal teased that Season 3 will adapt four major events from Martin’s novel, and it’ll be even bigger than the second season.
“That’s really exciting from a scope and scale perspective, and it’s something I think the show does really well… the things we’re building, it’s mind-boggling,” he said.
Condal then revealed what he’s most excited about. “We got to have a little fun this season, and there’s a conceptual episode that I’m really excited about that [Sara Hess] wrote, and that’s all I’m gonna say about it,” he revealed.
“It isn’t in the traditional vernacular of what we have laid out,” Condal explained. “It’s very character-driven, I think it’s really great and I’m really excited to see it rendered.”
HBOAs for what or who that episode will revolve around, it remains to be seen. We know the season will open with the Battle of the Gullet, we know it’ll introduce Daeron Targaryen, and Otto’s nephew Ormond will make his debut.
Talking to EW, Condal said: “In many ways, the Gullet has been on the minds of the production for about three years now and trying to figure out how we were going to mount it in a way that was both producible and exciting, thrilling.
“The planning that has gone into this… basically all departments working in concert to really make a thing that nobody has ever done before.”
