The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an independent constitutional body established under Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 3 of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act No. 14 of 2011 (revised 2012). KNCHR is mandated to develop a culture of human rights through the promotion and protection of rights and fundamental freedoms in Kenya.
KNCHR operates in alignment with the United Nations Paris Principles and is tasked with advancing the protection and promotion of human rights, serving as a watchdog over the government, and driving the country toward becoming a human rights-respecting state. KNCHR fulfils its mandate through five directorates: Complaints and Investigations, Research, Advocacy and Outreach, Legal Services, Regional Services, and Corporate Services. The Commission has offices in Nairobi, Wajir, Kitale, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nyahururu.
KNCHR invites applications for the following position:
The Data Analyst will support the project lead in executing operational and administrative tasks under the project “Advancing Human Security & Community Trust in Garissa, Mandera and Wajir Counties through Human Rights Monitoring and Mitigation Initiatives for Security Agencies and Communities.”
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Data Collection:
- Assist in gathering data from diverse sources, including government reports, NGOs, field investigations, and surveys.
- Ensure data integrity by collecting accurate and up-to-date information.
- Data Cleaning and Preprocessing:
- Clean, format, and preprocess data for consistency and readiness for analysis.
- Validate and resolve any data inconsistencies or errors.
- Data Analysis:
- Perform statistical analysis to identify trends and patterns in human rights data.
- Create descriptive reports and data visualizations to guide decision-making.
- Database Management:
- Maintain and update the organization’s data repository.
- Organize data for easy retrieval and analysis.
- Documentation:
- Prepare and maintain documentation of data sources, methodologies, and analysis procedures.
- Research Support:
- Conduct literature reviews and background research on human rights issues.
- Collaborate with the research team to provide data-driven insights.
- Reporting:
- Assist in preparing reports, briefs, and presentations summarizing findings for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaboration:
- Work with various teams to support data-driven decision-making and advocacy efforts.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Experience: At least one (1) year of experience in data analysis or research, particularly in human rights-related areas.
- Skills and Attributes:
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Passion for human rights and knowledge of international human rights frameworks.
- Familiarity with data management systems and tools.
- Other Requirements:
- Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
