Political Analyst Mutahi Ngunyi now says the Kenyan youth have awakened the much-awaited African renaissance across different countries in the continent.

In a statement shared via his official X account, Ngunyi noted that the impact of the push for better governance has triggered an awakening across countries in East Africa, Ghana and Nigeria as well as other republics, he, however, highlighted that with the sustained protests, there is danger of the revolution being stolen

“Genz have ignited the much awaited African renaissance or awakening. From Ghana, Nigeria to the banana republics of East Africa, they are celebrated. However, there is a danger: one, renaissance is not about protests. It is about possibility. Two, the revolution will be stolen,” he wrote.

Ngunyi’s remarks come amid a heightened clamour for new governance by the Gen Zs in the country.

The original quest to withdraw the contentious Finance Bill 2024 sparked an unwavering drive for a fresh dawn.

Sustained protests erupted across the country, forcing President William Ruto to drop the contentious bill; however, the youth responded with a variety of demands, including the president’s resignation, the firing of Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) for incompetence, and action against police officers who shot unarmed protesters, among others.

With the heightened demonstrations, the Head of State fired his whole cabinet, save for Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and promised to build a broad-based government.

“Upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have, in line with the powers given to me by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs,” Ruto announced on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

In compliance with his pledge to the nation, the president unveiled the nominated CSs for his new cabinet, which included several CSs from his former cabinet and other opposition leaders, stirring public controversy.

Speaking about his nominees on Saturday, July 27, 2024, the Head of State underlined that his new cabinet is intended to unite all Kenyans.
