Ruto pledges to equip, modernise police service to increase efficiency

President William Ruto has pledged to equip and modernise the National Police Service to increase its efficiency in discharging its duties.

In a congratulatory message to the just-sworn in newly-appointed Deputy Inspector Generals of Police Eliud Lagat (Kenya Police Service) and Gilbert Masengeli (Administration Police Service), shared on his official social media accounts on Friday, July 26, 2024, Ruto implored the Police to conduct its activities with professionalism and integrity.

“We congratulate the newly-appointed Deputy Inspector Generals of Police. The Government pledges to support the Police in equipping and modernising it to increase its efficiency in discharging its duties. We implore the Police to conduct its activities with professionalism and integrity,” the Head of State said.

Ruto on Friday met the new Deputy Inspector Generals of police at State House, Mombasa, a day after being sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court, Nairobi.

Ruto’s promise comes a few days after he announced an increase in salaries for all police officers, their prison counterparts and other security agency officers.

Lagat and Masengeli were on Thursday, July 25, 2024, sworn in as the substantive Deputy Inspectors General of Police in a brief ceremony that was presided over by CJ Koome.

The newly-nominated Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho thereafter handed over the NPS Command to Masengeli who will now double as the Acting Inspector General of the National Police Service.

This is after President Ruto nominated Kanja as the Inspector General, the National Police Service on July 25, 2024.

Kanja assumed the position of acting IG after the resignation of Japhet Koome on July 12, 2024.

He previously served as Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service and was the Commandant of the General Service Unit for five years.

“The I.G Nominee has undertaken extensive security-related training at home and abroad. A career police officer who has served for a cumulative period of thirty-nine years,” head of Public Service Felix Koskei said in a statement.
