While many airlines allow furry companions to travel, one passenger was criticized after his dog blocked his neighbor’s legroom.
In a post on Reddit, in the Slightly frustrating threada user shared a photo his father took from his airplane seat.
The snapshot shows him sitting with his legs in front of him, with the large canine partially blocking the allotted space in the footwell.
“My dad is on a 20 hour flight back from South Africa and said he’s about 40 screwdrivers deep. When I asked why he just sent me this,” the Reddit caption read, without revealing which airline.
In an edit to the post, the user, who posted under the name benjaminrogers91, clarified that he was slightly exaggerating about the time he spent on the plane and the number of alcoholic drinks his father had consumed.

“40 drinks deep and 20 hours is overkill by the way. I think the actual flight is 16 to 18,” he wrote.
The comments discussed whether the dog owner should have been restrained more.
“Some people are genuinely afraid of dogs and/or animals in general. This would have been a very stressful situation for me if I was the one forced to sit with the dog like that,” one user wrote.
“I’ve been on flights where the person’s dog has tried to jump on my lap the entire time. It’s RIDICULOUS. Not everyone wants their dog in their little personal space. If you can’t control them, don’t take them,” another raged.
“It’s more than a little frustrating to be told you’re entitled to it,” agreed another.
“I hope the airline compensated him. We were in a bulkhead row on a flight, a woman came on board with a large and incredibly smelly “service dog” and sat across from us in the aisle.
“A couple refused to sit next to her. I mean, they refused. They got off the plane. I hope the airline refunded their flight because I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same,” someone else shared.
“I would never let this happen,” said another passenger.

The comments debated whether or not dog owners should restrain their pets
“Book two adjacent seats or fly first class to have space. Invading someone else’s space that they paid for AND dirtying their clothes/shoes/carry-on luggage is insane to me. Ask a flight attendant to move, or have the owner [their] “Pet,” they advised.
In June, a United Airlines customer shared his experience flying with a dog at his feet.
“Very sweet dog, but clearly not a service dog,” they wrote alongside the photo of the furry dog in their neighborhood.
“The entire flight (including takeoff and landing) I had room for my legs. The owner tried to move the dog but couldn’t move him – he was too big and wouldn’t move,” they shared.
Many people believed that the passenger had the right to file a complaint, either with the cabin crew during the flight or with the airline after landing.
Someone said something similar happened to him on a flight and after filing a complaint through the airline app, he was given 10,000 miles.
In the US, it is not uncommon to bring pets on a domestic flight, provided they meet certain weight and size requirements. In other countries, passengers’ pets may only travel in the hold.
