Nairobi County Women Representative Esther Passaris has called on Kenyans to exercise caution on the roads as the festive season approaches.

In a statement shared via her X account on Friday, November 22, 2024, Passaris highlighted the devastating consequences of road accidents, following a tragic crash earlier in the day at Kibirigwi along the Sagana-Karatina Road in Ndia, Kirinyaga County.

The accident, involving a lorry and two vehicles, claimed the lives of five people on the spot and left several others seriously injured.

Passaris expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and urged drivers to prioritize safety during the holiday season.

She noted that the loss of lives on Kenyan roads is a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance behind the wheel.

“As the festive season approaches, it is essential for all drivers to exercise increased caution on the roads. The loss of lives on our roads serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of road safety.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and encourage everyone to prioritize safety during their travels this holiday season,” she said.

Gov’t on road safety

On November 15, 2024, Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi urged Kenyans to prioritize road safety as the festive season approaches. Citing a recent accident at River Yala’s Iguhu Bridge on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, which claimed 13 lives, Mudavadi expressed his condolences to the affected families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“I am saddened by the grisly accident and join in mourning with the families who have tragically lost their 13 loved ones… May the Lord grant them comfort and strength. To those who have been injured, I send my heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery,” he said.

He directed traffic police to enforce safety measures, ensuring all PSVs are roadworthy, properly registered, and adhere to licensed routes.

“I hereby instruct all traffic police officers to ensure that all PSVs are roadworthy and are driven safely with the registered name of the Sacco/Company/Institution, inspection status, and a valid Road Service Licence,” he added.
