Former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars midfielder Collins ‘Gatusso’ Okoth was on July 23 charged with the murder of 3-year-old Pamela Atieno, also known as Scovian Maya, in Milimani High Court.

Okoth and his co-accused, Sylvia Aoko Odhiambo, are charged with breaking into Pamela’s home in Lucky Summer Estate, Nairobi, in April 2024, and committing the crime while her parents were away.

Pamela’s body was later found discarded nearby.

During the hearing, Justice Alexander Muteti ordered that both suspects undergo a mental health evaluation before their next court appearance on July 30, 2024.

Gatusso will be held at Industrial Area Remand Prison, while Odhiambo will be detained at Lang’ata Women’s Prison.

Detective Constable Gilbert Kiprotich opposed bail for the accused, citing concerns about potential threats to witnesses and the suspects’ safety.

“We have received reports of threats against witnesses and concerns from the community regarding the suspects,” Kiprotich stated.

“Allowing bail could jeopardize the integrity of the investigation and the safety of those involved.”

Assistant Chief Peris Muthoni reported the murder to the police, noting that Pamela had bruises and was partially undressed, indicating possible sexual assault.

The victim’s mother, who has been socially ostracized due to the tragedy, expressed her fears in court.

“I am afraid for my safety and believe Gatusso could pose a danger to me if released,” she said.

“The community’s reaction has made it difficult for me to cope with the loss of my daughter.”

The court will review the bail request on July 30, after the completion of the mental health assessments and a social inquiry.
