The Star newspaper’s warehouse along Mombasa Road was raided after auctioneers were sent to seize property due to unpaid rent.

Kay Construction Company, on behalf of the landlord, claims The Star owes Ksh4 million in rent arrears.

A court order, issued on October 3, 2024, gave the go-ahead for the seizure. The court order instructed the Mombasa Road Police to provide security for the auctioneers as they seized goods from the godown.

The court also gave the landlord and auctioneers permission to secure the premises.s. The auctioneers took goods from the warehouse, which were locked in place until the debt is cleared.

Despite this, The Star has not been evicted, and the building will not be demolished. The Star is owned by the Radio Africa Group, which also runs several radio stations and Kiss TV.

This raid comes amid changes at Radio Africa Group, including mass layoffs. The group is still involved in major contracts, like the government’s MyGov pullout distribution.

The incident also comes just a few months after an employee of the Standard threatened to commit suicide over unpaid wages.
