A 2-metre crocodile was spotted sunbathing at a sand quarry in Chiang Mai before making a quick escape into the Ping River. Witnesses believe the reptile might have escaped from a farm during recent floods. Concerns for public safety have prompted calls for its immediate capture.

Reports have emerged from Chiang Mai about an unexpected encounter with a crocodile at the sand quarry in the Phibun concrete company area. Locals and fishermen, who were near Moo 5, Ban Si Ngam, in Mae Faek subdistrict, San Sai district, discovered the reptile basking in the sun.

The sighting caused quite a stir, as the crocodile, measuring approximately 2 metres in length, was not something the locals were accustomed to seeing.

One of the fishermen, quick to document the unusual event, reached for his phone to capture a video. However, the crocodile, sensing the attention, became startled and swiftly retreated into the Ping River, disappearing beneath the water’s surface.

This sudden disappearance has left the community on edge, concerned about the potential dangers lurking in their local waters.

Speculation among residents suggests that the crocodile may have escaped from a nearby farm or was perhaps swept into the area during the floods in October. It’s not the first time this particular crocodile has been spotted; locals have reported multiple encounters over recent weeks, said one concerned resident.

“The community is urging officials to capture the crocodile promptly to prevent any harm to residents.”

The officials have been alerted, and the community has been advised to report any sightings to village leaders or local administrative officials. These efforts aim to ensure the crocodile is captured safely and relocated to its appropriate habitat, reported KhaoSod.

In light of the recent sightings, officials have issued warnings to prevent children from swimming in the Ping River. The potential threat posed by the crocodile is not to be taken lightly, and the safety of the community remains a top priority.

Parents have been instructed to keep a watchful eye on their children and to heed the warnings not to venture into the river until the situation is resolved.
