Heavy security presence at JKIA ahead of planned demos

A multi-agency team has been deployed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) ahead of the planned #OccupyJKIA demos.

As early as 6 am, the team comprised of officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) and anti-riot officers from the administration police service had pitched camp at the national airport’s premises.

Heavy traffic was witnessed as travellers hurried for security checks.

The protests come as part of the youth’s measures to pressure President William Ruto to meet their demands.

Over the past weeks, the youths of the country have held sustained protests to call out the Kenya Kwanza regime over its governance.

The demos driven by Gen Z have since pushed the president to make several key changes in his administration including firing his cabinet.

However, the discontented youth continue to push for more demands and have since vowed to occupy the national airport despite beefed security.

In response to the anticipated demos, Acting Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja noted that the protesters must regard the rules on protected areas.

He added that despite their right to protest, the youth must acknowledge that trespassers of the aforementioned areas will be punished in accordance with the law,”

“The Protected Areas Act Cap 204 Laws of Kenya prevents the entry of unauthorized persons into areas which have been declared to be protected areas… (They) include the LPG Plant, the Bitumen Plant and Petroleum depots situated at the Embakasi Aviation Depot (JKIA),” Kanja said on Monday, July 22, 2024.
