Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has tipped US Vice President Kamala Harris to beat Donald Trump in the White House race.
Harris will face off with the Republican Party nominee after President Joe Biden, 81, dropped from the race and endorsed his VP. Khalwalwe, in a post on X on Monday, July 22, 2024, said Trump should not expect an easy ride back to the White House with Harris now being his rival.
“If Donald Trump thought he had wrapped up the US presidential race, the emergence of Kamala Harris presents a totally different ball game.
“I like her,” Khalwale said.
Endorsements
Before Biden dropped from the race, Harris had started picking up endorsements from some quarters, although she has yet to be officially endorsed. The endorsement cannot happen until the Democratic National Convention in August.
Harris is expected to face a rejuvenated Trump, who has pulled ahead in polling and was confirmed as the Republican nominee at the party’s convention in Milwaukee after surviving an assassination attempt.
The 45th US President said Biden was not fit to run and serve in the wake of later’s decision. Other senior Republicans joined Trump in their criticism and called on Biden to leave the White House immediately, not just the Democratic candidacy.
Barack Obama, Senate leader Chuck Schumer, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were among the first senior Democrats to praise Biden for ending his re-election bid.
Bill Clinton and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton revealed their stances and said they were backing Harris as the party’s candidate for November’s vote. Obama, on the other hand, did not explicitly back the VP or any other candidate.
Peter Welch, the first Democratic senator to call on Biden to drop his re-election run, called for an open process to nominate Harris.
Josh Shapiro, the Pennsylvania Governor, said he would do everything he could to help elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States.
Given the close trade and security partnership Kenya and the US have, the latter’s elections will be closely monitored in the country.
