Urgent rice recall in seven states over rodent contamination

Thousands of bags of rice have been recalled because they are suspected of being contaminated with rodents.

California-based Wehah Farms has recalled 4,600 boxes of its Lundberg Family Farms Sustainable Wild Blend Gourmet Rice because the product “may contain foreign objects that appear to be from rodents.”

Each box contains six one-pound bags, meaning there are more than 27,000 bags affected by the recall.

The FDA enforcement report does not specify what this foreign object might be.

This rice was sold in supermarkets in seven states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon and Wisconsin.

According to the company’s website, the recalled bags cost $5.99 and contained a mixture of black, brown, red and wild rice.

The lot number for these bags of rice is 231004, with an expiration date of October 4, 2024.

Wehah Farms initiated the recall on May 10, 2024, but on Wednesday, July 17, the FDA downgraded the contamination risk to Class II.

According to the FDA, a Class II recall means that if someone is exposed to the affected product, he or she could experience “temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

The risk of serious health consequences is ‘low’.

A Class III recall is the least serious, but a Class I recall is issued when there is a “reasonable likelihood” that using the noncompliant product could cause serious health problems or even death.

The recall did not include the 4- and 25-pound bags of the same wild rice. Many Lundberg Family Farms products are still available in stores.

The most recent recall took place a few days ago, when Kentucky-based AW Farms had to pull thousands of pounds of hot dogs from store shelves after they failed a key federal inspection.
