Raila issues 6 demands to Ruto before talks can happen

Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has issued six demands that must be met before the national dialogue spearheaded by the President William Ruto-led regime can happen.

In his statement issued on Sunday, July 21, 2024, the opposition chief, who noted that he was declaring his stand, said the government must compensate every victim of police brutality and their families.

“I would like to address you this morning. I agree that justice must come first before any talks. Towards this end I stand with you,” Raila said.

He also demanded that the government dismiss all protest-related protests and release abductees in jail.

In the same breath, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader stated that the government must resolve outstanding healthcare workers’ welfare and education (JSS teachers) grievances.

He, at the same time, stated that the government must revert all public healthcare insurance back to NHIF and subsequently discard SHIF.

Additionally, the Azimio leader called for the prosecution of all security sector perpetrators who facilitated atrocities towards peaceful Kenyans.

“Once these issues are resolved, we can focus on National Conversation and conducted transparently in a neutral venue,” Raila added.

Further, Raila proposed that the delegation partaking in the dialogue be constituted from various sectors including the youth, government, religious leaders, health care professionals, lawyers and teachers.

“We must come together to discuss national and constitutional critical issues touching on the following.”

Some of the issues he fronted included, good governance, skyrocketing cost of living, eradicating tribalism, fighting corruption as well as debt and fiscal management.

The Azimio supremo further lauded the Gen Zs for driving the sustained protests to make their voices heard and fight for a better country.

“To the young people of Kenya, you all must know that I am deeply moved by your dedication to the cause; and I believe a structured dialogue will bring the reforms you are fighting for and safeguard Kenya for your future,” he added.
