DCI arrests suspect, seize bhang worth over Ksh11M

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said they have arrested a suspected drug trafficker and seized bhang worth Ksh11 million on Saturday, July 20, 2024.

According to DCI, the Anti-Narcotics Unit conducted an operation after being tipped off by members of the public before they arrested the co-driver of the vehicle used as the driver escaped.

“Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives in the coast region have arrested a drug trafficker and seized cannabis sativa worth over Ksh11 million.

“Acting on a tip-off, the detectives conducted an operation along Samburu-Kinango road where they laid an ambush at Mdomo centre, successfully intercepting a heavily laden Toyota Ipsum Reg. No. KBJ 679M.

“Realizing the magnitude of the trouble that lay ahead, the car driver jumped out and vanished into a nearby thicket. However, the co-driver and comrade in crime, Elisha Omondi, 32, wasn’t so lucky, as he was cornered and arrested,” DCI said in a statement.

The crime investigation unit said the suspect is in police custody, and the commodities seized, which will be used as exhibits in the case, have been kept in a safe place.

“Search conducted in the vehicle revealed seven green gunny sacks containing long khaki rolls of marijuana weighing 389.45kg with an estimated street value of Ksh 11,683,500.

“The suspect was escorted to Mombasa Urban Police Station for processing while the recovered narcotics were kept in safe custody as exhibits,” the statement added.

Although they failed to arrest the driver at the scene of the crime, DCI is hopeful of getting hold of him in no time.

“Meanwhile, the detectives are pursuing the elusive suspect, and it is just a matter of time before he is smoked out of his bolthole,” it added.

This operation comes days after DCI nabbed a bhang estimated to have a street value of Ksh900,000 in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

Two suspects, according to the Kiambu Road-based agency, were arrested with the contraband after alighting from a bus.

“Two suspects, Clinton Ndede and Kelvin Sibukhu, were arrested earlier today at a bus station in Nairobi CBD after they were found with 17 bales of bhang, approximated at Sh990,000 in street value,” DCI’s statement said then.
