Napoli ‘to make shock move for Brighton’s Billy Gilmour’

  • Antonio Conte has already begun an overhaul of his pre-season squad
  • Gilmour has impressed at Brighton, making 32 appearances in the past campaign

Napoli are reportedly planning to lure Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour before the start of the season.

Manager Antonio Conte worked with Gilmour at Chelsea, where the 23-year-old made his breakthrough.

Gilmour has impressed at Brighton so far, making 32 league appearances last season, and is expected to have two years left on his contract.

But Conte is said to be keen to strengthen his midfield options after a squad shake-up, Telegraph defeated.

Conte has so far signed Alessandro Buongiorno from Torino, Rafa Marín from Real Madrid and Leonardo Spinazzola from AS Roma for a total of £40m.

Earlier this week it was reported that Paris Saint-Germain are “increasingly confident” they can formalise an £84m (€100m) deal to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli.

Chelsea and Arsenal, both in need of attacking power, have both been interested in the 25-year-old striker, with Enzo Maresca’s side heavily linked with a move for the forward.

With Kylian Mbappé set to move to Real Madrid this summer, it appears that PSG have freed up some cash and are looking to invest in the transfer market to strengthen their attacking options up front.

According to Italy’s SPORT Mediaset, the deal is “almost at a turning point” now that the Nigerian’s agent, Roberto Calenda, “has flown to Paris to talk directly with PSG.”

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is reportedly keen to pay around £109million for the Nigerian star, but PSG’s lower bid ‘could still unblock the deal.’

Osimhen had extended his contract with Napoli until 2026 in 2023, extending his stay at the Serie A club for another season.

Since his return from Lille in 2020, he has had a fruitful period in Naples.

In 133 appearances for the club in all competitions, he scored an impressive 76 goals. Osimhen helped Napoli to the league title in the 2022-23 season, in which he scored 26 goals.
