Ruto leads Kenyans in mourning former PS Karega Mutahi

President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning the sudden death of the former education Permanent Secretary (PS) Karega Mutahi.

In a statement on his official X account on Sunday, October 27, 2024, Ruto described the former PS as a hardworking administrator who had vast knowledge and expertise in the education sector.

In the touchy tribute, the Head of State stated that while managing the education docket, Mutahi’s expertise improved the management and delivery of teaching and learning of the students.

“We are saddened by the passing away of former Permanent Secretary Karega Mutahi. He was a firm and hardworking administrator who distinguished himself in public service. Prof Mutahi had vast knowledge and expertise in the education sector, and he brilliantly employed them in improving the management and delivery of teaching and learning of our children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the education fraternity at this painful time,” Ruto said.

Mutahi’s death

The news about the death of the former PS was announced by Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital Chairperson Olive Mugenda, who eulogised him as “a good friend and former boss.”

“So sad to lose my good friend and former boss, Prof. Karega Mutahi, former PS MoE. He was the pragmatic PS who got the assignments right and got the work done,” Mugenda said on Sunday, October 27.

“As PS MoE, Prof supported the Vice Chancellors during my time as VC-KU and his support and hard work contributed to our ability to post good performance and transform KU the way we did. His contribution to the education sector and KUTRRH in that critical operationalization committee will find its place in the book pages when the story is written.”
