Sheriff’s deputies fatally shoot 2 people while serving a warrant in Georgia

ALTO, Ga. — Sheriff’s deputies executing an arrest warrant in another county shot and killed two people in northeast Georgia on Tuesday.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies are in the process of serving an arrest warrant for a sex offender who violated the terms of his probation in the Banks County town of Alto.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers arrived at the home around 9:30 a.m. When they entered the home after 11 a.m., officers shot and killed two people.

Officials did not say what happened before the officers entered the home. Neither the GBI nor sheriff’s officials said why the officers shot the people. Both died before they could be taken to a hospital.

No officers were injured.

Banks County Sheriff’s Office was present but not involved in the shooting. It is not unusual for law enforcement officers to serve an arrest warrant in another Georgia jurisdiction.

The GBI is conducting autopsies on the deceased. Their names will be released after next of kin are notified, the GBI said.

The GBI did not immediately respond to an email Wednesday seeking more information, including whether any of the people killed were armed.

The GBI is investigating, as is standard practice with most police shootings in Georgia. The Banks County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether criminal charges are warranted after the investigation is complete.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating.
