‘I’m sorry we never found you’: Jay Slater’s mother leaves heartbreaking floral tribute to her ‘beautiful boy’ near ravine where teenager ‘fell to his death’ in remote part of Tenerife

Jay Slater’s family laid flowers at the spot where he died, along with messages describing him as a “beautiful boy” and “forever young.”

Bunches of white chrysanthemums and roses were left next to a large rock on a path overlooking the gorge in Tenerife where the 19-year-old’s body was found on Monday morning.

The memorial, decorated with blue ribbons, also included a teddy bear wearing an England football shirt, a small angel holding a jeweled cross and a red pot containing a candle.

A handwritten message from his mother, Debbie Turner, attached to one of the bouquets with a blue clip read: ‘To my beautiful boy. I’m so sorry we never found you. I miss you so much. You will always be young and forever missed. Love you so much, Mom.’

Another touching message attached to a post from Jay’s father Walter Slater read: ‘To my boy, dear daddy, always, XXXX’

The tribute was secured with a blue ribbon tied around the pole, along with a bracelet of wooden beads, including one with the letter J on it.

A third handwritten message from Jay’s brother Zak, written in a halting hand, was attached to a single white rose.

It read: ‘I love you little bro. Never in a million years did I think I’d be doing this. I’m taking care of mommy and daddy. I hope you’re out there partying with grandpa. I hope to see you again someday. Rest in peace bro, I love you, Zak XX’.

A fourth tribute consisted of a photo of Jay with the caption, “Rest in peace, Jay Slater, age 19 / 19 years old.”

The message, which was illustrated with four blue love hearts and two crosses, added: ‘Tenerife will always carry you in our hearts! Gone, but never forgotten. Love + prayers for you!’

The spot where the tributes were left is about 100 yards down a trail in the Baranco Juan Lopez Valley, and it is believed Jay walked through it shortly before his death.

It is located about a mile from the deep gorge where he is believed to have fallen four weeks ago as he walked back to his hotel in Los Cristianos after a night out.

The view of the beautiful, rugged valley and the gorge in the distance was eerily quiet this morning, the silence broken only by the cries of crows flying high in the sky.

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, disappeared on June 17 after a night out on the final day of the NRG music festival at Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas.

He had left his friends behind and gone with two men, who took him back to their Airbnb accommodation on the outskirts of the village of Masca, about 20 miles away.

While in the car, he sent a Snapchat message to his friends bragging that he had just stolen a Rolex watch worth £12,000 from a partygoer and that he wanted to sell it for £10,000.

He later shared a photo on his Snapchat account, showing him standing in front of a house shortly after 7 a.m.

About an hour later he called his girlfriend Lucy Law and told her he was ‘lost in the mountains with one percent battery left and no water’ and had missed the bus back to his accommodation in Los Cristianos.

He claimed he left on foot to return to his hotel, despite it being about an 11-hour drive.

MailOnline later found a witness who said he had walked north from the village, instead of taking the winding road south towards Los Cristianos.

According to locals, he decided it would be quicker for him to find the coast and walk back along it, rather than take the winding road back through the mountains.

They claim he may have veered off the road and taken a path towards the Juan Lopez Valley after seeing the sea in the distance.

But after a kilometer the trail ended abruptly and he had to scramble down a slope to finally reach the rock formations at the end of the valley, closest to the shoreline.

It is believed that he was trying to climb up a ridge to reach the sea, but he tripped and fell into the gorge.

It took nearly four weeks for search teams to find him because the canyon area is so difficult to access.

Spanish authorities confirmed yesterday that the body found has been identified with fingerprints as that of Jay Froom.

His belongings were also found next to his body. The body showed injuries resulting from a fall from a great height.
