This follows KRA’s ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy of taxpayer information through the data clean-up exercise first announced on June 24, 2024.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced an important update for all registered taxpayers, announcing new steps for authenticating mobile phone numbers linked to their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) on the iTax system.

The taxman announced on Monday, November 11 through a notice that this follows KRA’s ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy of taxpayer information through the data clean-up exercise first announced on June 24, 2024.

“Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) reminds all taxpayers that further to our Public Notice on “Taxpayer Register Data Clean Up Exercise” dated 24th June 2024, all registered taxpayers are required to authenticate the mobile telephone number registered in iTax upon logging into the system,” the notice reads in part.

KRA thus revealed a straightforward authentication procedure that all taxpayers must follow when logging into the iTax platform.

This process aims to validate mobile numbers to facilitate secure communication and reliable service delivery.

How To Verify

The authentication procedure is as follows;

1. Log in to the iTax system using your PIN number and password. iTax will display the current mobile phone number linked to your PIN.

2. If the mobile telephone number displayed is accurate and the preferred number, click on “send verification code” and a code will be sent to the displayed mobile phone number.

3. If the mobile telephone number contact is not accurate or not the preferred number, change the number on the displayed pop-up to your preferred phone number and then click on “send the verification code”. A code will be sent to the new preferred mobile phone number.

4. Enter the verification code received on your selected mobile phone number to log into iTax.

This verification step aims to ensure that taxpayer information is current, particularly contact details so that KRA can communicate efficiently with taxpayers. Accurate contact information helps KRA reach taxpayers for updates, reminders, and other essential notifications.

As part of the data clean-up exercise, KRA has rolled out One Time Password (OTP) for an update of taxpayers’ contacts in the iTax system.

“Upon logging into iTax, the system will display the mobile number registered in iTax through which an OTP will be sent for validation of contact details. Where the number is incorrect, taxpayers will be required to capture the correct mobile number through which an OTP will be sent to enable access to the iTax system,” explains KRA in a different public notice.

The introduction of the One-Time Password (OTP) system for mobile verification was among the key enhancements, designed to improve security on the platform.

“We urge all registered taxpayers to update/correct their registration details as appropriate, on iTax, including their phone number, physical address, email address, the physical location of businesses, residency status, directorships or partnerships held etc.,” adds the notice.
