Mukuru Killings: DCI Blames X User For Spreading Fake News On Name Of Main Suspect

DCI, earlier today, identified the serial killer as 33-year-old Collins Jumaisi Khalusha who is said to have confessed to killing 42 women from as early as 2022 to July 2024.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday, July 15 pinpointed controversial political commentator, Francis Gaitho, for spreading misleading information regarding the identity of Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, the main suspect in the heinous Kware killings who was earlier arrested.

In a press statement, DCI boss, Mohamed Amin denied social media reports that it was covering up key details in the ongoing investigations into the killings following the discovery of more than 10 bodies in a quarry in Mukuru Kwa Njenga.

However, many Kenyans on social media have continued to interrogate several aspects of the ongoing investigation while offering narratives that counter the position of the detectives working on the case.

The investigative agency accused influential social media accounts, Gaitho included, of spreading an element of mistrust in their works, with the firebrand X user revealed to have got the names of the main suspect incorrect.

“After our press briefing earlier today regarding the pursuit and subsequent arrest of the prime suspect in the Kware killings namely Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, we found it unfortunate that some X users discredited our investigation by alleging that we issued a misleading statement by getting the names of our 33-year-old suspect wrong,” the statement read in part.

“Specifically, one Francis Gaitho (@FGaitho237) on his X account carelessly and with total disregard to the need to verify information, indicated that there existed no public record of our suspect, and went ahead to post the names, images and description of another innocent Kenyan by the name Jairus Onkundi.”

In response, Onkundi, a 24-year-old graduate from Meru University of Science and Technology, trooped to the DCI’s Complaints Directorate while surrendering himself to the authorities for clearance from any culpability in the ongoing investigation.

Jairus was revealed to be a bachelor’s degree holder in Computer Science from the named university, a course he undertook between 2019 and 2023.

“According to the complainant, he had received the circulating posts from worried family members and friends while at his workplace at Parklands in Nairobi, forcing him to rush to our offices fearing for his life in case he fell into the hands of agitated persons in the case of mistake of fact.

“Jairus has since been given the necessary assistance from the side of the police, and this press briefing provides an opportunity to clarify to the members of the public that the 24-year-old is not a criminal, and neither is he wanted by the DCI for any reason whatsoever,” Amin added.

The DCI boss further assured Kenyans that the agency’s investigations are methodical and thorough and that it is always keen to ensure that any information originating from the DCI is credible and well-verified.

Meanwhile, the DCI has also managed to reach out to the family of the earlier mentioned first victim of the suspect’s killings, that is, Imelda Judith Karenya, whose mother arrived at the DCI headquarters to record a statement on her daughter’s disappearance.
