Daisy May Cooper admitted that The Cotswolds is ‘hell if you haven’t got any money’ as she opened up about growing up in the wealthy area.

The comedian, 38, who shot to fame after both writing and starring in hit series This Country, never felt the need to move to London and still lives in the West Country.

Talking about life in The Cotwolds in an interview with The times she confessed: ‘[It’s] hell if you don’t have any money. You are surrounded by wealth.

‘My parents are so bothered by the fact that rich people drive everyone off the road in Range Rovers. I had a chip for a while. That’s not who I am now.’

Daisy, who is believed to have pocketed £2million over the past two years, spoke about her attitude to wealth as the star explained that money can’t buy happiness but it does bring choices.

She joked: ‘Now I have great linens. That doesn’t mean I’ve become at**t. I have good food. Who would I want to impress by eating bad food? I still do things that are considered working class, like I prefer caravan holidays so the kids are entertained. If we went to Soho Farmhouse they would be bored. You pick and choose.”

Daisy also revealed that she had tried to own a Range Rover even though she can’t drive, joking that she bought it for £90,000 cash and lost £40,000 when she sold it.

This Country first aired on BBC Three in February 2017. The mockumentary followed cousins Kerry and Kurtain Mucklowe in a run-down town in the Cotswolds as they caused trouble while out of work.

The siblings previously revealed that they “had nothing” when they started writing the comedy and “couldn’t even afford McDonald’s.”

Daisy and Charlie worked as cleaners at the time, earning around £100 a month for the work.

However, in March her firm Daisy Cooper Ltd filed its annual accounts, showing it paid £189,601 in corporation tax for the year to March 31, 2023.

At a rate of 19 percent the company made a profit of approximately £997,900.

The year before, in 2022, it paid £155,865 in tax, making a profit of £820,342.

Daisy said of Lorraine in 2020: ‘It was such a bleak time. I just left drama school, got nothing, had to move back in with my parents and clean at night.

‘I think I was getting about £100 a month and while we were cleaning we came up with these characters and said, ‘We’ve got to write something.’

“Because humor was the only thing that got us through such a depressing time.”

However, their efforts paid off when Charlie and Daisy’s comedy series became a huge success.

And they made it a family affair; casting their father Paul as Martin Mucklowe in the show, Kerry’s father and Kurtain’s uncle.

Trevor Cooper, Daisy and Charlie’s uncle, also stars in the show as local antagonist Len Clifton.
