Chaos, gunshots as locals retrieve 2 more bodies in Kware

Two more bodies have been recovered at the Kware dumpsite amid chaos and gunshots as members of the public engage the police.

The recovery process is in its third day after the discovery of dismembered bodies at the site located in Embakasi South, Nairobi.

Gunshots and chaos, according to a video published by a local TV station, characterised the activities in the area on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

According to Mukuru Community Justice Centre, a non-governmental organisation that deals with social justice movements whose aim is to organize masses to monitor, document, and refer human rights violations to relevant institutions, one person was shot in one of the incidences.

“One person has been shot in the ongoing protest in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Kware,” the NGO said in a post on X on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

As the recovery process continues, President William Ruto promised a deep investigation into the killings and said those who are culpable will be dealt with according to the law.

Police changes in Kware

In an effort to carry out a proper investigation, the Police acting Inspector General Douglas Kanja, transferred officers who have been serving at Kware Station.

“To ensure fair and unbiased investigations, I have moved the officers from Kware Police Station. In this difficult time, we stand with the community, and we remain committed to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice.

“To ensure a fair and unbiased investigation, I have moved the officers from Kware Police Station,” Kanja said on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

The discovery of the decomposing bodies comes at a time when the government is under intense spotlight following the Gen Z-powered protest.

President Ruto and state agencies like the National Police Service (NPS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) will be placed under intense limelight by members of the public and stakeholders as the recovery efforts continue.
