Max Verstappen has announced that he has been suffering from medical problems for some time following his crash with Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone in 2021.

The Red Bull driver and Hamilton battled for the world title during the 2021 season, with the British Grand Prix being one of the most dramatic moments.

Verstappen and Hamilton collided at Copse corner as they battled for the lead of the race.

The collision eventually saw the Dutchman crash into the tyre barriers at 180mph, with Hamilton ultimately claiming victory.

Verstappen admitted in an interview with Red Bull Bulletin that he was still suffering from the crash for several months.

He called his victory at the US Grand Prix three months later a “special victory” because he had problems with his vision during the race.

‘A lot of people don’t know this, but I was still suffering from vision problems at the time due to my crash at Silverstone.

‘Sometimes the track started to get really bumpy and during the race I was obviously struggling with Lewis overtaking me, but at the same time I was also struggling with myself because I was struggling with my vision.

‘It was like riding a wave on a boat going 300 kilometres an hour. I had to try to control my breathing in a different way to get rid of the problem, nothing else worked.

‘For a few laps I was on the verge of stopping the car because I couldn’t see properly. It happened on bumpy tracks or with a lot of advertising boards.

“I didn’t tell anyone at the time because I had a championship fight. That’s why it’s a very special win for me.”

Verstappen was taken to hospital for precautionary measures following the accident. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner later revealed in 2021 that the star had been ‘knocked out’ in the crash.

Red Bull slammed Mercedes after the race, calling the way they celebrated Hamilton’s victory “disrespectful” while Verstappen was in hospital.

Verstappen did not miss a single race after the incident and took victory in the US Grand Prix in his seventh race since the crash at Silverstone.
