‘Apologise for failing Kenya, President Ruto’ – Makau Mutua tells dismissed CSs

Law lecturer Makau Mutua has asked dismissed Cabinet Secretaries to apologise for failing Kenya and President William Ruto.

President Ruto took the decision to disband his cabinet after prolonged pressure and public outcry, and Mutua, a staunch supporter of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, has asked the former CSs to stop tanking Ruto for their appointments and rather apologise.

“Not a single one of the Cabinet Secretaries has apologised for failing the people of Kenya and the President. Instead, they are only thanking the president for giving them a chance to serve. Tone deaf. Please take responsibility. Say I am sorry,” Mutua said in a statement posted on X on Friday, July 12, 2024.

After what started as a Gen Z-powered protest against the Finance Bill, it continued to gather momentum, forcing the president to withdraw the bill entirely.

The pressure on the Head of State did not stop there, as he has been under some backlash with some of his CSs targeted for underperformance.

On Thursday, July 12, 2024, Ruto dissolved his cabinet, and eyes will remain on him to see who he is going to nominate for the next appointments.

After they were dismissed, several CSs took to their social media to thank President Ruto for their appointment into cabinet in Kenya Kwanza’s government.

Linturi’s farewell

Mithika Linturi, who served in the agriculture docket and was linked with the fake fertiliser scandal before he was saved by a sub-parliamentary committee, chose to point out his achievements in his farewell message.

I’m pleased with the achievements we’ve made so far in the agricultural sector since my appointment to date. Some of the key achievements in the docket include the accelerated registration of farmers through the e-voucher digital platform, from 1.3 million in 2022 to 6.4 million in 2023.

“Successful delivery of subsidized fertilizer under the national fertilizer subsidy programme, with over 12.5 million bags supplied to our farmers. Tea reforms boosted exports to Kshs180 B and increased smallholder farmer payments by 17.6%, enhancing household incomes and livelihoods.

“Tea value-added exports grew by 133 per cent, from 8.7 million kg in 2022 to 20.3 million kg in 2023. Meat exports increased by 8.6 per cent, from 14,985 MT in 2022 to 16,281 MT in 2023, due to the establishment of new export markets.

“We improved our livestock breeds by rolling out the sexed semen for breed improvement – an innovation that became a game changer for farmers. We were able to reduce the high cost of living through the hard work of the farmers and stakeholders, the county government, and partners,” Linturi pointed out in a post on his X handle.
