Ruto Tasks Principal Secretaries With Running His Cabinet

Ruto revealed that the PSs and other government officials would undertake operations in ministries.

President William Ruto on Thursday, July 11 instructed his Principal Secretaries to continue running the government’s operations after a bombshell decision to dissolve his whole Cabinet, thus sending his Cabinet Secretaries (CS) home.

During his address to the nation, Ruto revealed that the PSs and other government officials would undertake ministry operations.

This is after Ruto sent home all his Cabinet Secretaries, save for Musalia Mudavadi who is the Prime Cabinet Secretary and doubles up as the Foreign Affairs CS.

“During this process, the operations of government will continue uninterrupted under the guidance of Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials,” he announced, adding “I will be announcing additional measures and steps in due course.”

Following this radical decision, the first time this has ever happened in the 2010 Constitution, Ruto hinted at forming a unity government through the formation of a new Cabinet that would consider other political formations and the private sector.

Further, the Head of State noted that the new broad-based government would be smaller owing to the current economic state of the country.

The current debt which stands at Ksh10 trillion will also be a key priority for the new government set to be unveiled in the coming days.

“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent and irreversible, implementation of radical programmes to deal with the burden of debt, raising domestic resources, expanding job opportunities, eliminate wastage and unnecessary duplication of a multiplicity of government agencies and slay the dragon of corruption consequently making the government lean, inexpensive, effective and efficient.”

Reactions To Ruto Firing All CSs

Meanwhile, moments after the shocker, Kenyans flooded social media in their numbers, with many lauding the move as a strategic and courageous step towards progress.

The swift action taken by Ruto to shake up the Cabinet has sparked a flurry of responses on social media and beyond, with a significant portion of the younger generation viewing the decision as a positive and necessary shift in governance.

A few politicians, influencers and activists have praised the move as a bold statement signalling a commitment to steering the country in the right direction, while others seized the moment to flood the timelines with memes and hilarious jokes.

It is worth noting that President Ruto had on Friday, July 5 denounced calls by a section of Kenyans to conduct a complete overhaul of his Cabinet and send home CSs labelled incompetent in their roles.

Speaking during the X Space Conversation hosted jointly with influencer Osama Otero dubbed #EngageThePresident, Ruto clarified that he would explore other alternatives to address matters raised by Kenyans regarding some Cabinet Secretaries.

“I will not dissolve Cabinet because I am in the process of looking at things differently,” President Ruto clarified.
