Sober Cara Delevingne reveals she’s now ‘got her power back’ after drug and alcohol abuse left her ‘super depressed’ – and admits the first time she got drunk she was just EIGHT years old

Cara Delevingne has revealed she feels like she now has ‘her power back’ through sobriety, after years of becoming ‘very depressed’ due to drug and alcohol abuse.

The 31-year-old model has struggled with addiction issues during her time in the spotlight, and infamous photos surfaced two years ago of her looking miserable outside Van Nuys Airport in LA after attending a festival.

In a new interview, she said that now that she’s clean, she feels like she’s no longer “controlled by other things” and that she enjoys spending time with people who drink.

She also admitted that the first time she got drunk was at her aunt’s wedding in 2001, when she was just eight. She said: ‘I got drunk that day. I was eight, what a crazy age to get drunk!’

Cara, who is launching her new alcohol-free Prosecco brand Della Vite Zero, said The times of her new sober life: ‘I used to think that drugs and alcohol helped me cope…but they didn’t, they kept me sad and super depressed.

‘I feel like I have my power back and that I am no longer controlled by other things.’

On the photos of her outside the airport, where she looked completely naked and had no shoes, she added: ‘It was a stupid decision to go straight from a festival to work. I should have waited a day. But it was going to happen to me anyway, there were plenty of photos of me looking drunk.’

She says she doesn’t know if she would have gone to rehab and gotten clean if she hadn’t seen that footage. She credits getting clean with getting the part of Sally Bowles in the West End production of Cabaret.

Cara explained that being around people who are drinking doesn’t “mess her up” and that she had “just as much fun” at Glastonbury this year, she just didn’t stay up as late.

This came after Cara revealed that she was experiencing unexpected “pain” from being sober.

After quitting drinking in 2022, the supermodel, who recently launched the alcohol-free wine, said she initially expected she would feel better on mornings after going out and not drinking alcohol.

To her surprise, the next day she suffered from a ‘terrible’ headache, caused by drinking sugary soft drinks.

“Almost two years ago, when I got sober, I thought, ‘I’m probably not going to go out as much anymore, my life is probably going to change.’ And to be honest, I went out a lot more than I used to – which is great, except when you go out, you drink a lot of sugar,” she explained to The sun.

But after her nights of sober partying, she would wake up in the morning with a terrible headache.’

“I’m sober to be healthy and happy. Instead, I feel left in pain,” the Paper Towns actress noted.

Cara eventually decided to create a non-alcoholic wine brand to avoid the headaches. She wanted to create something that tasted “great, was great quality, but was low in sugar and calories.”

“I just like having something in my hand. For me, it’s never been about the alcohol,” she said. “Whether it’s a wedding or someone’s broken up with someone, you reunite with a glass of something.”

Delevingne concluded: ‘It’s not about being sober, it’s about being yourself. If I want to go out and have fun, I want to celebrate.’

In 2023, Cara told Vogue that she had checked herself into rehab after DailyMail.com published photos in 2022 that shocked her.

The model said a number of problematic public appearances had raised concerns about her mental health.

She told Vogue about how she previously wasn’t ready to face her demons until she found herself in a “bad place”: “I’ve had some sort of interventions, but I wasn’t ready. That’s the problem.

Cara went on to explain that being around people who drink doesn’t “mess her up” and that she had “just as much fun” at Glastonbury this year, but just didn’t stay up as late.

‘I hadn’t seen a therapist in three years. I just pushed everyone away, which made me realize how bad I was feeling.

‘I’ve always thought that work should be done when times are bad, but actually work should be done when times are good.

“The work has to be done consistently. It’s never going to be fixed or completely cured, but I’m at peace with it, and that’s the difference…

‘I used to be always focused on the quick fix of healing. For example, I would go on a week-long retreat or take a course on trauma. That helped for a while, but I never really got to the heart of the matter, to the deeper issues.’
