Senator Ledama: I will fire all corrupt officials when I take over the country’s leadership

Narok County Senator Ledama Ole Kina has revealed his ambitious plans to eradicate corruption in the country should he take over the country’s leadership.

In a statement shared via his official X account on Sunday, July 7, 2024, the outspoken senator highlighted that the country’s state of corruption is at an alarming rate as Ksh2 billion is lost every single day.

He added that when he takes over the country’s leadership, he will ensure that the corruption watchdog, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is headed by a 24-year-old who has a lot to lose rather than the current leadership which enables corrupt governors and Cabinet Secretaries (CSs).

When I take over the leadership of Kenya, the head of @EACCKenya will be a 24-year-old Kenyan who has a lot to lose when corruption rules than the current leadership who wine and dance with corrupt Governors and Cabinet Secretaries. Allowing Kenyans to lose over Ksh2 billion a day through corruption. I will fire all of them,” he wrote.

Ledama’s remarks come amid an uproar over poor utilisation of public funds by government officials.

A section of Kenyans expressing dissatisfaction with President William Ruto’s administration have decried that the aforementioned officials display opulence and extravagance at the expense of taxpayers who struggle to survive the lean times.

They have subsequently staged demonstrations calling for the president’s resignation and recalling a section of parliamentarians and other leaders who exhibit the mentioned behaviour.

In his response, following persistent anti-government demonstrations that morphed from the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests, the Head of State announced austerity measures to curb the spending of public money and ensure that the government operates within its means.

Some of the measures announced by the Head of State include the dissolution of 47 state corporations, suspension of the hiring of Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS) and the removal of budgets in the Offices of the First Lady, the Second and the Spouse of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.

“Budget lines providing for the operations of the offices of the First Lady, the spouses of the Deputy President, and the Prime Cabinet Secretary shall be removed,” Ruto stated.
