Heavy rains in Rajasthan cause wall to collapse, toddler among three dead

Three people, including a toddler, were killed when a wall collapsed after heavy rains in Bikaner, Rajasthan. Many more were rescued after they got stuck while crossing a river overflowing with rainwater in Tonk.

Many districts including Jaipur, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Kota, Chittorgarh, Jhunjhunu, Alwar, Udaipur and Jodhpur received light to moderate rain on Friday, a spokesperson of the Jaipur Meteorological Centre said.

In Namokiya village in Malpura area of ​​Tonk, three people on a tractor were stuck in fast-flowing water while crossing a stream. They were rescued by police, Malpura SHO Chenaram said.

The government has declared a two-day school holiday as a precautionary measure, he added.

Three people, including a toddler, were killed in Bikaner’s Bichwal district after a factory wall collapsed during heavy rains.

According to Bichwal SHO Naresh Kumar, two labourers and a child died after being trapped under the rubble.

The victims have been identified as Pinna, Sanjay and one-year-old Manisha from Madhya Pradesh.

Rajasthan continued to witness heavy rainfall, with Malpura in Tonk receiving 176 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, the Meteorological Department reported on Friday.

In the state, Sajangarh in Banswara received 116 mm of rain, followed by 107 mm in Tijara, 101 mm in Danpur, 102 mm in Nainwan (Bundi), 97 mm in Thanagazi, 90 mm in Pipalda (Kota), 88 mm in Tapukda, 82 mm in Fagi in Jaipur, 75 mm in Karauli, 75 mm in Ramgarh, 68 mm in Nawalgarh in Jhunjhunu and 65 mm in Baswa in Dausa.

According to the weather bureau, moderate to heavy rainfall occurred in many parts of the state in 24 hours.

From Friday morning till 5.30 pm, Karauli recorded 55.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Anta (28 mm), Bikaner (21.4 mm), Kota (17.8 mm), Jaipur (17.6 mm) and Dholpur (9 mm). Many other places recorded light to moderate rain.

The maximum temperature on Friday was 40.8 degrees Celsius in Phalodi and Bikaner, 39.8 degrees in Ganganagar, 39.6 degrees in Jaisalmer, 38.6 degrees in Jodhpur, 39 degrees in Barmer, 38.3 degrees in Sangaria and 36.4 degrees in Jalore.

A current over southwestern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining eastern Rajasthan contributed to the heavy rainfall, with the monsoon wave sweeping over Bikaner and Sikar, the weather office said.

The monsoon flow is expected to remain active over most parts of eastern Rajasthan with significant rainfall expected over Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Bharatpur and Udaipur districts.

According to the weather bureau, heavy rainfall is expected in Tonk and surrounding districts.

There is a high probability that heavy rain will continue in East Rajasthan on Saturday, but will ease on Sunday and June 8.

Rain is expected in some parts of northeastern Rajasthan on Sunday and June 8. More rain is likely on July 9 and 10.

According to the weather office, rain is also expected in Bikaner division and eastern and northern parts of Jodhpur division in the next two to three days.
