They’re not prima-doners! Turkey’s footballers snub healthy food to order 300 doner kebabs – with one player having three to himself – to celebrate their run to the Euro quarter-finals

The Turkish stars celebrated reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 by ordering 300 doner kebabs from their four-star hotel in Germany.

Vincenzo Montella’s team have made it to the last eight, where they will face the Netherlands on Saturday.

They celebrated by ignoring the healthy food footballers normally eat and instead enjoying kebabs.

As reported by BILDa large order was placed with Lister Doner in Hannover after Turkey reached the last 16 and this was repeated after they reached the quarter-finals.

Restaurateur Daldar Junaid told BILD: ‘I got a phone call and someone said I was the team manager of Turkey and that I wanted to order 300 kebabs. I wanted them within three hours. I could hardly believe it.’

Junaid said a player had eaten three kebabs, but he refused to reveal the identity of the person.

He said: ‘They invited everyone: the staff alone was 150 people, plus security, police, hotel staff, everyone.

‘The players enjoyed it. One even ate three kebabs. But I won’t say who. It’s a trade secret!’.

Former Everton and Crystal Palace striker Cenk Tosun, who is now back at Besiktas, was among the players who visited the restaurant. Real Madrid’s Arda Guler was also pictured.

After serving fresh kebabs for over three hours, the catering team was presented with a signed turkey shirt.

Turkey finished second in Group F, behind Portugal.

Montella’s team then defeated Austria 2-1 in the quarter-finals, with goalkeeper Mert Gunok making one of the best saves of all time when he stopped a header from Christoph Baumgartner.

Doner kebabs are extremely popular in Turkey, with the country having applied for the doner kebab to be protected by the European Union, but this has been contested by Germany.

Turkey plans to register the name döner in Europe so that it can only be used by people who adhere to the registered production method.

Complaints could also come from Greece.
