List of politicians who have rejected salary increment

The Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) announced salary increments for state officers, members of parliament and cabinet secretaries effective July 1, 2024.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s salary increased to Ksh990,000 per month while the National Assembly Speaker’s salary increased to Ksh1.2 million per month. MPs and senators’ pay increased to Ksh739,600.

A governor’s pay has been adjusted to a scale of Ksh990,000 and the MCAs will take home Ksh164,588.

However, the proposed salary rise has faced a backlash from a section of the legislature who have rejected the increase.

Here is the list of the politicians who have declined the pay rise.

“I have today written to the clerk of NA declining any increment in my salary for the rest of my term as MP for Saboti Constituency until the mess in our country is sorted once and for all.”

“I have further requested the same to be directed to a bursary kitty towards the many needy students grappling with a lack of school fees. Kenya needs a Renaissance. One step at a time.”

2. Embakasi East  MP Babu Owino

“MPs and other state officers should not be added even a coin. It’s sad to increase salary while Kenyans have no jobs, Kenyans have no capital to start businesses, Kenyans have no money to pay school fees, No money for medication. Say NO to salary increment,” he said.

“(The) Salary increase proposal by SRC for MPs and Senators is insensitive and ill-advised. The discussion should to CUT not Add. I reject any increment and welcome deduction of salaries for All state and public workers like myself. It’s time to REVIEW government structures,” She stated.

“There are things that almost look like a setup! We are in a crisis and SRC is proposing an increment of 14K! Yaani mnataka tupigwe tukufe ndio mfurahi? Mimi sitaki!.”

“MPs’ pay rise amid chaos” is a bit of outrage hunting. Let’s be clear what we are talking about here. The SRC is proposing to add 14k to my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective, I pay close to 300k in income tax every month. I will not fight for 14k extra when the whole country is saying we need to lessen taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Ikae.”

“We are where we are today because Kenyans hate and are angry with the ongoings in the country and if we don’t speak to them and take action, we will go nowhere. It was never the Finance Bill, the Finance Bill was a trigger”

“The salary increases for state officers including governors is unwarranted at this time,”

8. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris

This is akin to robbing a naked person! I reject any salary increments. It’s the exact opposite of what we’re calling for; austerity. It’s fiscally unsustainable and our current economic situation can’t absorb it. Let’s work towards living within our means.
